“나 독고진이야!” – “I am Dokko Jin!”
A household name in the world of Best Love, Dokko Jin routinely repeats this line to remind others of his status. While this line takes a different emotional meaning during the course of the drama, generally it’s meant as Dokko Jin is a top star and that needs to be acknowledged. If threatening to sue (See: 고소할꺼야!- I’m gonna sue!) is his shield, the fact that he is Dokko Jin demonstrates the strength of his armor.
After the incident at the SeBaKwi quiz, Gu Ae Jung tries to apologize to Dokko Jin even going so far as using his fist to hit her head against it. But he reminds her that he’s Dokko Jin. According to him, it’s Dokko Jin’s world and what he says goes.
Despite disliking Dokko Jin, Gu Ae Jung does protect him and his image when it comes to other people. After being slapped by Ex-KBSN Manager Jang, she goes to a public restroom to clean up when an middle-aged lady lectures her about leaving her abusive boyfriend. Her and some other woman assume it’s the unseen man in the car with Gu Ae Jung so she makes him duck in order to prevent people from recognizing him. In fact, Gu Ae Jung is very much aware that the currency in this world is your public image.
As Dokko Jin starts to get bit by the Gu Ae Jung love bug, he whines over not understanding why his heartrate (See: Heart) is beating uncontrollably. Drama titles jump out as visual representations of his feelings and even Ae Jung’s nephew thinks that he’s gonna marry his aunt when Dokko Jin visits their house.
He starts to accept his feelings and confesses to Gu Ae Jung. But in true Ddong-ko Jin (See: Phone List) form, he conceit outweighs everything else. Doesn’t she feel honored that he of all people is confessing his feelings to her, in this setting? Not anyone could ask an amusement park to keep the lights on for him. It’s because he’s Dokko Jin that they could even consider it. She kindly but flatly rejects him.
Lee Seung Gi even makes a cameo appearance in the show. In this world, he’s just as conceited as Dokko Jin. When Dokko asks him to put Gu Ae Jung on Seung Gi’s variety show, he needles him by saying that he won’t take away Seung Gi’s refrigerator CF. Unwilling to back down, Seung Gi faces him to say that even Dokko can’t take way his CF contract. The boys go back and forth until they’re interrupted by some fans and they smile it out for the cameras.
When Dokko Jin begins to fall in love with Gu Ae Jung, this line takes on different forms. It’s used along with, “I’m gonna sue!” to protect Ae Jung from the “arrows” flying her way. Whether it’s warning Ex-Manager Jang from the award ceremony incident or turning down the Hollywood offer to be Ae Jung superhero, he’s using his status as an expression of love. He also uses it to protect himself from the fear of dying. After learning that he needs another heart surgery, he sits in the hospital lobby contemplating the turn of events until someone recognizes him. Putting on his sunglasses, he resumes his top star mode and signs some signatures. It’s the self-adulation he needs to convince himself that he can survive the surgery.
When Gu Ae Jung finds out about the surgery, she is genuinely upset. She loves him and doesn’t want to use him in that way. So he tells her to be there for him during his surgery.
DKJ: When my heart stopped again, in order to make it go Dugeun-dugeun, I met you.
GAJ:You said it was broken because you were being hypnotized. Now it’s become fate. Wow, I’m really amazing, don’t you think?
DKJ: I care about looking cool in front of other people that I’m the Dokko Jin that can’t show he’s scared. Knowing that I’m Slimy, Butthole Jin, come and be with me so I’m not scared.
GAJ:I promise to go. Promise!
When Dokko returns from overseas, Jae Seok suggests that he do an event for Gu Ae Jung (See: Red Bow). He replies that he is a now a very special, upgraded Dokko Jin, not some random present to be tossed to Gu Ae Jung. No longer the jerk that he was in the beginning, this special Dokko Jin now digs through the recycling bin with Ding Dong to find the purple sneakers that Ae Jung may have thrown out. When some middle-aged women stop to scold him for the mess he is making, Ding Dong tries to clean up the mess by himself while trying to explain what a special person Dokko Jin is. Dokko Jin stops him saying that real superheroes cannot reveal their true identity, terrified at what kind of lashing he’d receive if they found out who he really was.
Ae Jung uses Dokko Jin’s own words against him as she worries that since he’s become ultra special, he’s supposed to go quickly past her. She and President Moon fret about the fallout he’d receive if people found out. Perhaps with his “new” heart, Dokko Jin is confident that his Dokko Jin status would be enough to get past the fallout. He confesses to the world that he is in a relationship with Gu Ae Jung and goes on a movie date to prove how happy they are. The public aren’t kind as people continue to not wish them well and this is an entirely new experience for the Very Special Dokko Jin.
Like “I’m gonna sue!”, “I am Dokko Jin!” becomes a bit of a running joke. He says, “Since Dokko Jin is a model, he can make any bad scenery look good,” during their picnic date and since he’s Dokko Jin, he can still get CF contracts as evidenced by the milk ad. While the strength of his household name never truly recovered to top star status after the confession, being the Very Special Dokko Jin is still a coveted pair of shoes to walk in.
